What Is Carbonite Best for?
Carbonite is a simple back up service that provides amazing security, great customer support, and privacy solutions. You can use Carbonite to protect data on as many computers as you need.
While it is sparse on features and doesn’t have the syncing capabilities of cloud storage platforms like Dropbox, many users don’t need such functionality from a backup service. Even then, it is still a pretty great option.
Features
If you are looking for a whole wealth of features Carbonite is not the backup solution for you. On the other hand, it is perfect for clients who want a simple tool without many bells and whistles. During the tests for this Carbonite review, we found the solution easy to use. It is suitable for even the most tech unsavvy users out there.
All the same, it does have some great features:
Backup and Restore Services
Carbonite has an amazing backup and restoration service.
The process is quite simple.
You will merely have to reinstall your OS and applications, and Carbonite will do the rest for you. If you don’t want to recover all data from your old desktop, you can choose specific folders and files. The best part – you get unlimited storage options.

The backup speed is not that great, but more on that later.
Scheduled and Continuous Backup
Carbonite provides scheduled and continuous backup options. You can set up the backup for certain hours of the day, according to your preferences. This can be quite useful if you don’t want to throttle your bandwidth during times when you need it the most.
Algorithm Backups
Carbonite’s block-level algorithm ensures zero waste of resources and time. It only re-uploads files when there are changes made to them.
Versioning
The Carbonite software offers versioning.
You can retrieve older versions of any files that you have changed over time. However, you should note that this feature isn’t completely unlimited. You can only access the 12 most recent versions of the files you want, but that can be quite enough when you need something old.
Any files you delete will also be kept safely with Carbonite for 30 days.
External Data Hard Drive
One of the great things about the Carbonite is the recovery service via courier. For a small fee, you can get an external hard drive with all of your data secured. The service is available throughout the United States.

In case of a serious disaster, offline restoration points are godsent.
Security Options
Carbonite offers secure AES 128-bit encryption. You should note that a copy of your passcode is kept by the company in case you forget it.
In case businesses don’t want their backup service to keep the code, they can choose to deploy the AES 128-bit encryption and make sure that Carbonite doesn’t keep a copy. While you will be getting the ultimate hacking protection and top-tier security if you choose this option, you should be aware that your files will be encrypted for an eternity if you forget the passcode.
There’s also a two-factor authentication for an extra layer of protection.
Accessibility
Carbonite is available on Windows and Mac desktops. But if you’re hoping for a Carbonite mobile app, there’s none. However, the company is working on it.
Speed
One thing that bugged us when testing Carbonite for this review was the speed of uploading and backup.
It’s slow.
This is where the scheduled backup comes in handy. You can schedule it for a time where you don’t need the bandwidth and Carbonite can utilize it all to create a backup.
Plans and Pricing
Carbonite offers three billing options:
- One computer – $6 a month, if billed annually. You get automatic cloud service, remote file access, 128-bit encryption, and optional external hard drive backup.
- Multiple computers – $24 a month, if billed annually. You get everything available from the first option, plus centralized management and admin controls and FERPA, GLBA & HIPAA support.
- Computers plus servers – $50 a month, if billed annually. You get all of the extras mentioned up until now, plus backup for databases and applications, image backup, bare metal restore, plus the option to choose from 128 or 256-bit encryption.
Easy-To-Use Interface
Carbonite reviews praise the straightforward interface and for a good reason.
Carbonite For Mac Reviews
You merely have to pick files from the disk to back them up onto the Carbonite servers. You can also simply select whether you want to download all the files into the original location on the system or have them restore in one location.
Carbonite tends to run quietly in the background, as all good backup services should. You can always pause the backup if you need to, but you don’t really need to mess around a lot to make sure your data is safe.
Support
Download
Carbonite has an extensive knowledge base. There’s also a YouTube channel, with a lot of useful videos.
Carbonite a helpline that you can use during workdays, but the email support team answer rather quickly. If you send them an email, they always respond within 24 hours.
Also, they are extremely polite and helpful. A lot of people praise how helpful the support team is.

Most of the Carbonite reviews on their download page, Reddit, and Google are positive. People love the simple interface and easy controls. Users prefer Carbonite since it runs in the background without creating any issues for the device that it’s running on.
We did find something negative mentioned in a lot of Cabronite reviews, though – people want more features and options.
Carbonite Reinstall On This Computer
A lot of users complain that it is still not available on mobile devices. The slow download speed also irks a lot of people.
Our Verdict
If you want an easy and quick way to back up the files on your computer, then Carbonite is probably the best option for you. It offers a simple way to secure your data without the need for any advanced features or expensive bells and whistles.
The privacy, security, and customer service options by Carbonite are all great.
There are still a few issues that you will have to work around. The download speed, as well as the lack of mobile device support, can be a bother for a lot of people. We promise to update this Carbonite review as soon as those issues are taken care of.
Wrap Up
So, if you’ve ever wondered if Carbonite is worth it, we’d say – yes. It’s a simple solution, but simple is not always bad. It gets the job done without much hassle.
When we tested Carbonite for this review, we found out that it is a reliable tool with some pretty good features, although it can be slow.
We’re hoping there will be a mobile app soon!

Which Carbonite Plans are Mac-Compatible?
Carbonite’s most affordable plan, their Basic Plan, is also Mac-compatible, so you can look cool, and be smart at the same time. Why risk losing all of those amazing photos, music, and other files when you can back all of them up from your Mac(s) for about $5 a month. (Speaking of photos being backed up, when you upload them to a service like Shutterfly, they are backed up as well.)
Here are a few key features of Carbonite’s Basic Plan for Mac:
- Unlimited cloud space for your home or small business Mac computer
- Automatically backup photos, music, documents, application settings, emails
- Customer support (based in America) is always available
- Sync, share, and access your files from remote locations with their free apps
So, what isn’t automatically backed up with the Mac / OSX version?
Unlike on the Plus and Prime plans (Windows only) Video has to be manually backed up from Apple computers, as well as your OS operating system and software programs. External hard drives are also not automatically backed up with the Mac plan. There are also coupons for Norton security for mac here.
What operating system (OSX) is Carbonite compatible with?
If you have Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later, you can download and use Carbonite. (supported)
Anyway, the crazy weather that we’ve been having is just one reason why file backup on Carbonite’s cloud is even more important than ever. In fact, here in Pennsylvania we’ve lost power twice already this Winter. The worst part of it ended up being when they turned the power back on, as hundreds of people lost computers and appliances after the power surge. Could you handle starting from scratch after a power surge, or even just a spilled cup of coffee?
